Google Tag Manager - GTM

How To Implement Google Tag Manager Code In WordPress

In order to effectively manage all the user journey trackers, it is highly recommended that you opt-in for a tag management tool. Google Tag Manager is one of the best tools available in the market for free so through-out the blogs series, we will be using GTM to implement all types of tracking. It is easy to use and once implemented, you can implement all of your tags through this tool without editing your website source code. Below I will guide how to add Google Tag Manager to your WordPress website in order to start tracking user journeys.

Step 1: Login to your Google Tag Manager Account

Step 2: Click on Admin from the top menu & select the website container for which you would like to implement the GTM code and finally click on Install Google Tag Manager as shown in the picture below.

Step 3: Copy the code from this page as shown below

Step 4: Now login to your WordPress website’s Admin Panel http://www.YourWebsite.com/wp-admin

Step 5: Mouse-Over on Appearance menu & Click on Editor from the Sub-Menu

Step 6: On the Editor screen, Select your active theme from the Top Right corner drop down.

Step 7: Now, Click on the Theme-Header file from the left Template file list menu

Step 8: Scroll down on the code until you will find the <body> tag

Step 9: Paste the code you have copied from the Google Tag Manager right after the <body> tag as shown in the picture below & Click on Update File.

Step 10: Browse your website and check the page source. Here you will find the Google Tag Manager code right after the <body> tag.

Guys, please note that it is highly important that you place the Google Tag Manager code right after the opening of the <body> tag rather pasting it in <head> tag. You can read more about it here on the Google Tag Manager Guidelines page.

That’s it! Google Tag Manager implementation was completed. Now we will continue implementing other trackers on our website using this tool.

Don’t forget to comment if you need some help or have suggestions for me.
